As a Kelowna motherhood photographer, I often lean into soft, golden-hour light to capture gentle, dreamy moments between mamas and their little ones. But with this session, I set out to push myself creatively—to work with the kind of harsh, midday light that many photographers avoid.


And I’m so glad I did.


This session took place under the bright noon Okanagan sun, with high contrast, deep shadows, and bold highlights painting the scene. The challenge of working in this kind of light forced me to think differently—to find beauty in the drama, the contrast, and the realness of it all. It wasn’t about perfection. It was about embracing what was available and leaning into it with curiosity and creativity.


At the heart of this session was a deeply connected mother and her baby, sharing quiet moments of breastfeeding and closeness. The harsh light carved lines and shapes across her body, across her baby’s soft skin, creating a visual poetry that felt powerful and raw. Instead of diffusing the light, I used it. I followed the way it wrapped around their forms, how it highlighted skin textures, and how the shadows gave depth to the emotion in each image.


Breastfeeding photography is already deeply intimate—it's rooted in tenderness, trust, and strength. And when captured in such unapologetic light, that story becomes even more visceral. This motherhood session in Kelowna reminded me why I do what I do: to document not only the polished, glowing moments, but the bold, raw ones too.
